There's a song that says breaking up is hard to do. It's true, of course, but does it have to be so difficult?
For those that don't have a clue what a nice way to break up with someone is, I offer up Harlan Cohen, a nationally syndicated columnist and author. He gave Tulsa World some tips on how to end a relationship. Perhaps my favorite one of these is:
"The most important thing to remember is to break up with someone the way you'd want to be broken up with and to be comfortable."
It seems so obvious, and yet, why don't people always do this when saying goodbye to someone they've dated?
Of all the times people have broken up with me, it rare when I truly didn't see it coming. And when I broke up with one of my ex's, he always seemed to know what I was about to say before I said it.
Still, I think people (myself included) don't always break up kindly. Sometimes people get so freaked out about telling their boyfriend or girlfriend they want to break up that they don't even do it at all. They simply refuse to call again or block emails. Some people even move!
It's rude. And what's worse, that bad karma can't be good for a person.
A few months back I asked people to mention the worst way they've ever been dumped. The various ways because broke up were sometimes sad and painful, and other times just plain spiteful. I think there has to be a better way!
